The Dial/command buffer of any Hayes compatible modem is 40
characters. You have ATDT to dial, and a <Cr> ([enter]) to send so that
leaves 35 characters you can have in your string. If you set T as default &
save it (ATT&W) then you can use ATD to dial and have 36 characters free.
If you are using commas in the string, to pause, and you use several in a
row ,,, (for 6 seconds, default is 2 seconds for @ comma) you can set the
comma for 6, ATS8=6 and then use ONE comma for 6 seconds.
Another 'trick' is to split the dial string. If you put ; (semi colon)
at the END of the string, it returns to command mode. Then you can send a
2nd 'AT' string to the modem. This works well for DATA calls, as you can
have one entry for the initial dial string, and then several dial strings
to complete the call to different tel numbers. Suppose you had to dial an
800 number, and your 'code' and then dial the number you were calling. The
first entry could be like this
1800-666-9999,,,1234; and another entry like this
1203-333-6666
You'd dial 1st entry, and when you hear the proper 'tones' or voice through
your speaker dial the 2nd one. >>>NOTE: You do need to put X1 in the dial
prefix ATX1DT so it will dial when there is NO DIALTONE (ie; after the the
1st dial there will be no dialtone for the 2nd).
